THE AUTO-9
Robocop's gun from its firing sound to it's apperance really does symbolize the power and prestige of a finely tuned weapon in the hands of a finely tuned machine.

THE ROBOCOP GUN
If you are getting a RoboCop suit as one of yourhalloween costumes you need the Auto-9 gun to make it complete. It really is that iconic and associated with RoboCop. In the movies the weapon used is in essence a modifed Beretta m93R. The barrel was remanufactured specifically for blanks and then the barrel extension you see on the gun was built, along with the ribs and rear sight. The grip also had to be enlarged to fit Robo's hands.

But the really big advantage of this particular Baretta was that it fires a three-shot burst every time you pull the trigger. So what that gave the filmmakers was a very large quantity of flame, all in one burst. To maximize that effect, vents were cut into the barrel giving it a flame direction off to the side. This increased the overall look from different angles and gave it a little more flash. Sometimes they got a flame out the side ten inches long and another flame out the front over a foot long.



Of course the gun in reality, when fired, sounds nothing like the sound which echoes through the movie. Such is the magic of post production sound editing. The finished gun sound was made up of a variety of real noises.

In addition to the firing guns a variety of stunt "dummy" ones were used for non-firing shots (for safety reasons). These "dummys" were made in rubber.

The gun on the RoboCop:The tv series is a lighter version of the one in the first movie. They created a lighter gun when importing the real gun into Canada proved difficult. It was also easier to handle by the actor in the Robo-suit.



THE NAME AUTO 9
The reason RoboCops gun is called Auto-9 is not certain, it could be because it's an automatic pistol & the bullets used are of 9mm in diameter. It could also just as well be the 9th automatic pistol OCP has patented (similar to Glock's naming system of 17, 18, 19, 20, etc.). It is also common practice when a company is developing a product to have an earlier seperate prototype name before marketing can find a suitable final name (remember how everyone was surprised at the sight of the pistol as well as the new murphy and the OCP guy said the pistol was something they were working on), this would explain why such a interesting distinctive pistol would have such a bland name. In addition to its appearances in the other Robocop films and TV series, the Auto 9 has also appeared in several other movies, including Sin City and City Hunter.



The Auto-9 name is never mentioned in any of the movies but it was actually referred to as such in the original script. The name then made its way from there into promotional materials, games, comics etc. Replicas of the Robocop gun include rubber casts, airsoft plastic bb guns as well as more simple versions like water guns. A replica Auto-9 will certainly add credibility to any Robocop halloween costumes that you create.
