During the design refit of the 2340's, Starfleet began drafting a new type of sub-light propulsion which would let them break the 0.25c limit, then classified as Full Impulse. Above this speed, the effects of Einstein's Theory of Relativity began having drastic effects on the ship and it's surrounding environment. Even at Full Impulse, ships would have to routinely have update their chronometers based on the standard time of Starfleet Command.
As has been known for centuries, the Theory of Relativity doesn't apply to subspace. It was suggested that a subspace field could be erected around a vessel as it performs speeds above 0.25c. Early designs required the warp nacelles to be charged and running, creating a static warp shell. This method was deemed to be inefficient as it required 200% more power to maintain the warp shell while the impulse engines pushed to achieve close to light speeds. The project was set on the back burner while Starfleet made more achievable improvements.
After the battle of Wolf 359, the Hyper-Impulse project was re-examined to determine if the goal of breaking the 0.25c barrier was possible in an efficient manner. The USS Albacore, an Akira-class, was designated to be the testbed for this technology. The Hyper-Impulse Engine called for a large modification to the actual engine itself; the addition of a subspace field generator that would run independant of the warp nacelles. This provided several advantages over the old design, the most notable being that if the nacelles were rendered inoperable, high impulse speeds could still be reached. Also, the subspace field generators would consume considerably less power as they didn't require to be engineered to meet the stresses of faster-than-light speeds. A slight downfall to the system is that the subspace field
generators in the engines could only safely maintain Full Impulse (which was now 0.95c) for 30 minutes constant. After that, they had to cool down for at least two-thirds of that time.
The Hyper-Impulse Engine that was a success on the Albacore had now become standard issue for newly constructed Akiras, while the older ones would recieve this upgrade upon their next refit. After a year of testing within an entire class, the new drive was ready to be put into mass production for all ships. The integration produced no problems except on smaller vessels like the Sabre and Defiant, which had to have individual designs created for their irregular shapes. As of 2379, all vessels in the fleet that were constructed after 2330 had received the upgrade, with more being readied for the aging Excelsior, Miranda, and Constellation classes.
While other major Alpha Quadrant powers are racing to develop this technology, the Federation is the only one to put this technology to use on their vessels. For the time being, it gives them a large advantage in tactical situations. It was thought that the Borg had similar technology, but recent developments concerning the starship Voyager have rendered the Borg's existence questionable.

Laser systems:
The advantage of a point defense system over any ECM system is that it can physically intercept missiles with either energy or missile weapons of its own. In the case of point defense lasers the system is beam-based.
The weakness is that each laser cluster, can only engage a single missile at a time. Recent tactical engagements have shown that volleys of 20 missiles at a time are not unheard of. So, the laser clusters are most effective when a number of ships are working together to shoot down a single broadside.

the overlapping fields of point defense fire make this system extremely effective. In one-on-one situations, the system is proportionally less effective. Any ship type can employ the system, but the problem is, of course, mass and power alocation. BB's have a lot more room, mass, and power capacity than DD's.
Other limitations include the fact that missiles maneuver and photon torpedoes are very fast. It takes a sustained (albeit not long) hit from a PD laser to destroy either. This is very hard to accomplish. A touch and go or glancing hit will not destroy the target.
The type I point defense laser was created in response to the Dalriadan War of 2410 and built into several series of ships first launched late in that year. The initial system was rushed into production. The lasers had an effective range of only 150,000 km, inside the 200,000 maximum detonation range of the Dalriadan missiles, but outside the normal detonation of 100,000 km.
Since 2410, there have been two revisions of the point defense laser system. The type II system was never put into production because it required significant retrofitting to enlarge capacitor banks to power the system due to poor power usage of the laser system employed. The current system, the type III has a refined laser core and can generate pulses capable of intercepting incoming fore to a range of 300,000 km.

Drone Systems:
The second type of point defense system is the drone. Drones attempt to draw enemy fire away from the starship which controls them and to themselves by using sophisticated ECM gear which makes the drone appear to be the starship itself to targetting sensors. A network of drones deployed around a starship which is itself using its ECM systesm, gives any incoming fire multiple targets which it must distinguish between in order to damage the actual ship.
Because some weapons, such as photon torpedoes, use proximity detonation and never actually strike the targetted ship, point defense drones also carry powerful jamming systems intended to interfere with guidance and targetting systems and to cause premature detonation

In an alternate timeline of the Earth year of 2403, two years after the Enterprise-E began her maiden voyage, Admiral Kathryn Janeway went back in time to the Earth year of 2377 in the Delta Quadrant to bring the starship Voyager back to the Alpha Quadrant. One of the unique technologies she brought back with her was the "Ablative Shield Generator." This shield generator is capable of generating a nearly indestructible metallic shell around a starship.
The Ablative Shield Generator is composed of 4 basic components:
1. Subspace divergence field generators.
2. Modified transporter pattern buffer.
3. Molecular pattern storage unit.
4. Emitter array.
The subspace divergence field has the ability to duplicate matter atom to atom of equal energy mass (E=mc^2). This field is generated in modified dual shield generators. The field is then shunt into the transporter pattern buffer where the subspace field is processed to give it an energy pattern of certain matter with the same properties such as colour, texture, and strength. The pattern is from the molecular pattern storage unit which contains the energy and molecular pattern of the metal known as adamantium. Adamantium is one of the strongest metals known to exist second only to neutronium. Why adamantium and not neutronium? Neutronium would burn out the pattern buffer instantly. Though adamantium can be replicated, the maximum possible output is only 2kg a day, so therefore, simulated adamantium is the next best solution. Also a starship does not have the energy storage to create a true shell around the ship. The newly formed adamantium pattern is sent to the emitter array where it forms a shell less than 1mm thick around the ship a few metres away, following the contours of the hull like the standard shield grid. This process differs from particle synthesis.
Since the shield generator requires a lot of power to maintain its "molecular structure," the ship has to sacrifice power from areas that also require a lot of power, such as warp drive or weapons. If for example weapons are needed, then warp engines are deactivated. If warp drive is needed, then weapons are powered down. It is a similar problem for warp capable stealth ships that uses cloaking devices such as the Klingons and the Romulans. Since the adamantium shell does not have a true molecular structure, then the shell can be opened and closed very easily in order to fire weapons for example. Opening in the shell for impulse and thrusters exhaust, warp grille and others are protected by independent force fields.
Since the shield was built in an alternate future, the temporal prime directive has halted the research and development of the ablative shield generator until the Sheliak War in the late 2380's


NOTES
USS ATLANTIS is based upon the ship with which Commodore Brown escorted
the last World's Fleet back to the alpha quadrant. It was called a myth
for 300 years .
The fleet was found by Commander Data and Tom Pairs on a scout
mission in the delta flyer and a class 6 scout ship in to srive space
they discovered the Atlantis drifting in hypersleep on a track
into The delta quadrant the ship was a day away from enterprise and voyager
when the srive attacked the enterprise and voyager.
Atlantis' sensors picked up the attack Tom Paris's surprise the ship
head had gone to warp and got commodore
Out of hibernation and commodore brown and crew ordered to go to
Quantum warp and was in the mix of battle in two minutes and used
her C.M.C to dispatch the srive attack
Atlantis was lost two years later in a ambush by the brine and srive
all of the crew evacuated; all the crew survived.
A new Atlantis was constructed a year later and has gone through two
refits

I really like the amount of details and care you out into drawing them. I did a lot of (mostly star trek) drawings like that myself. I would strongly recommend you to go the next step and put them into CAD! With Rhino3D and Hypershot as a render plugIn its quite easy and you get quick, good looking results. I would love to see those concepts in 3D-render form! :-)
