Description

Lockheed Northrop A-22 Vigilante 2

US Navy developmental program for an advanced attack aircraft, designated A-22, to replace the A-6 Intruder family and other tactical aircraft in the late-1990s/early 2000s. The program emphasizes that, to the maximum extent possible, commonality of systems will be maintained with the US Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF).

The Navy selected the team of Lockheed and Northrop in early 2005 to develop the aircraft, rejecting the proposal from Northrop/Grumman/LTV. The program is expected to cost approximately $45 billion for an estimated 450 aircraft.

The ATA will emphasize low-observable and Stealth technology to improve its survivability. Flight testing is slated to begin in 1992 using an Pratt & Whitney YF220 non-afterburning
